Hiring Family Members And Friends
Proceed carefully when hiring family members and friends
One of the biggest complaints that business owners have is how difficult it is to find good employees. Well, the answer may be right under their nose - hiring families members and friends of their best employees.
Hiring friends and family members can be a little tricky if not handled right. Personal disputes in or out of the workplace, can affect business. That's why most big corporations have policies against hiring more than one family member. But not all of them. Some companies look for relatives of good employees. If their currect employee shows a great work ethic and attitude, than other family members will most likely have one too.
Here are a few quildlines to go by when hiring family and friends:
- Don't hire someone's relative just because they "need" a job. If someone has trouble holding down a job,
you don’t want them either.
- Before you interview them, ask specific, detailed questions about the relative's qualifications. See if
they have the relevant work experience or training by what they tell you.
- Don’t have relatives and friends work too closely together. You may run in to behaviorial issues or vacations or family
emergencies that may leave you short-handed.
- Watch out when hiring spouses!
- Be extraordinarily cautious about working with your own spouse. You may end up with the business or the relationship (or both) on the rocks.
- Be toughest on your own close relatives. It's good for other
employees to know that the boss' family member or friend doesn't get a free ride.
